On January 6, 1907, Dr. Maria Montessori founded the very first Montessori school, which was in Rome (Casa dei Bambini). Annually, Montessorians celebrate the last week of February as “Montessori week,” and this year is our Centennial Celebration (1907 – 2007).

Mrs. Kayihan (our Academic Director) wrote a proposal to our Washington State Governor—Christine Gregoire—describing the history of Montessori Education in our state and requesting her to proclaim this week (February 26th - March 3rd, 2007) “Montessori Centennial Week.” Governor Gregoire graciously issued the proclamation!

We are very proud of the fact that in 2001 Mrs. Justus received a proclamation from the Senate and another one from the City of Federal Way to honor her 50th year in education in Washington state.

One hundred years of Montessori history around the world and 56 years at Spring Valley Montessori School prove that Montessori education works for all children!

Mrs. Kayihan and Mrs. Foldi are traveling to New York City to celebrate the Centennial with other members of the American Montessori Society (AMS). They will bring our Governor’s tidings with them!
